    In the lake city of Srinagar in Kashmir, the Mogul Emperor Jahangir built the beautiful Shalimar gardens in the 17th century for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. So breathtakingly beautiful were the four terraced gardens of Shalimar that the Emperor recited the famous Persian verse upon its completion – ‘If there is a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this’.

    Under the royal patronage of Emperor Akbar, the greatest ruler of the Mogul dynasty during the 16th century, Kashmir rug weaving flourished and rugs using the finest Kashmir silk and wool were created for the Mogul courts. The rugs which combined Kashmir tradition and Persian doctrine earned the status of a ‘school’, with Mogul craftsmen introducing new floral and animal motifs.

    Pari Mahal (translation ‘Palace of Fairies’) is part monument and part garden, located on the spur of a hill overlooking the beautiful lake city of Srinagar in Kashmir. Originally a Buddhist monastery, Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan’s eldest son Dara Shikoh converted it into a school of astrology in the 17th century. Dara Shikoh was a gentle and pious Sufi intellectual and was an erudite champion of religious and cultural interaction among people of all faiths.
